The sand covers about 635,000 km, i.e. 33 percent of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's 2 million km. Most of the sand clusters are concentrated in the Arabian Plate, in the east and southeast of the Kingdom. Deserts have other local names, such as: Batra', Ti'is, Qawz and 'Irq.

Ar-Rub' al-Khali (Empty Quarter) Desert

It is the largest connected sand cluster in the world, extending across four Arab countries: The Kingdom, UAE, Oman, and Yemen. It stretches around 430,000 km in the Kingdom, and is situated within three administrative provinces: The Eastern Province, Najran, and Riyadh. Moreover, it constitutes 67.7 percent of desert areas in the Kingdom.

Al-Nufud al-Kabir Desert

It covers an area of 65 thousand km and is situated within three administrative provinces: Hail, al-Jawf, and Tabuk. It also constitutes 10.2 percent of the total desert areas in the Kingdom.

Al-Dahna Desert

It stretches 45 thousand km and covers five administrative provinces: The Northern Borders, Hail, Qassim, Eastern Province, and Riyadh. It also constitutes 7.1 percent of the total desert areas in the Kingdom.

Al-Jafoura Desert

It stretches 32 thousand km and is situated within the administrative borders of the Eastern Province. It also constitutes 5 percent of the total desert areas in the Kingdom.

Nafud al-Mazhur

It stretches 11 thousand km and is situated within two administrative provinces: Qassim and Hail. It also constitutes 1.7 percent of the total desert areas in the Kingdom.

Al-Bayda

It stretches 9 thousand km and is situated within the administrative borders of the Eastern Province. It also constitutes 1.4 percent of the total desert areas in the Kingdom.

Uruq Subaie

It stretches 6 thousand km and is situated within the administrative borders of Makkah al-Mukarramah. It also constitutes 1 percent of the total desert areas in the Kingdom.

Al-Habal

It stretches 6 thousand km and is situated within the administrative borders of the Eastern Province. It constitutes 1 percent of the total desert areas in the Kingdom.

Uruq al-Wadi

It stretches 6 thousand km and is situated within two administrative regions: Riyadh and Aseer. It also constitutes 1 percent of the total desert areas in the Kingdom.

nnNafud al-Thuwairat

It stretches 4 thousand km and is situated within two administrative regions: Riyadh and Qassim. It constitutes 0.6 percent of the total desert areas in the Kingdom.
