The Saudi Geological Survey has estimated that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is home to two hundred types of coral reefs which are located on the Red Sea, in different colors and shapes. The Arabian Gulf coasts include around sixty species of coral reefs called al-Fushut, al-Kitaa', al-Qassar, and al-Halat, according to their composition and size. Some of them take the form of barriers, while others look like bays.
Coral reefs are found in large areas on the Kingdom's coasts in the Red Sea, around the islands, and other areas along the Kingdom's coasts. They are available in large numbers at entrances to the Gulf of Aqaba, specifically between the islands of Tiran, Sanafir, and the Saudi coast.
The Red Sea is one of the richest seas in the world with its coral reefs. Some of these reefs are found on the surface of the water, especially during tidal waves. Moreover, coral reefs are an enabling environment for fish to reproduce, and fishing activities are largely practiced there. Fishermen are familiar with most of the coral reefs and their names.
