The National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) is a program that aims to maximize and improve the share of renewable energy sources in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by increasing the contribution of renewables to the energy mix for electricity production to nearly 50 percent. The NREP was launched by the Ministry of Energy to achieve the strategic goals outlined in the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

NREP activities

Through the NREP, the Ministry of Energy works to diversify the national energy mix used to produce electricity by increasing the share of gas and its renewable energy sources. Renewable energy in the Kingdom entails fostering a new industry for renewable energy technologies, supporting the growth of this promising sector, encouraging public-private partnerships, mobilizing private sector investments, and establishing a competitive domestic renewable energy market.

Through the program, the Kingdom aims to attract investment by achieving the lowest prices in the world. It boasts the most competitive prices for generating wind and solar energy, with record-low production costs globally. The Kingdom possesses natural capabilities and resources that position it as a key player and leader in this sector. To ensure the success of this program, the Kingdom is committed to providing all requirements for the development of renewable energy projects.

Renewable energy projects

The Kingdom has launched a total of approximately twenty-two renewable energy projects, including thirteen new projects currently under development in the field of renewable energy. The total capacity for these thirteen new projects is estimated to be 11.4 GW. Investments in these projects amount to roughly SAR34 billion (USD9 billion). Upon commencement of their operations, these projects are expected to contribute to the elimination of approximately twenty million t of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. The Kingdom is implementing the circular carbon economy model with the aim of achieving its commitment to reducing emissions by 278 million t per year by 2030.

The Kingdom intends to launch a national geographical survey project starting in 2025. The project aims to establish 1,200 stations for gauging renewable energy resources across all provinces of the Kingdom. The program targets various renewable energy sources, including solar photovoltaic energy and wind energy.

Among these registered projects in solar and photovoltaic energy are: Sikaka Solar PV Project, Dawmat al-Jandal Wind Farm Project, Shuaibah Solar PV Project, Rabigh Solar PV Project, Jeddah Solar PV Project, al-Qurayyat Solar PV Project, al-Madinah Solar PV Project, Rafha Solar PV Project, Sudayr Solar PV Project, Layla Solar PV Project, Wadi ad-Dawasir Solar PV Park Project, Saad Solar PV Park Project, ar-Rass Solar PV Park Project, al-Hanakiyyah Solar Power Project, Tabarjal Solar PV Project, Yanbu Wind Farm Project, al-Ghat Wind Farm Project, Waad al-Shamal Wind Farm Project, Shuaibah 2 Solar PV Project, Saad 2 Solar PV Park Project, ar-Rass 2 Solar PV Park Project, and al-Kahfah Solar PV Park Project.
