Sultan Al-Abdulaziz was one of the pioneers in the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and among the sixty-three men who accompanied the Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud in his journey from Kuwait to recapture Riyadh in 1902.

In 1998, King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud directed that the pioneers be honored with a special medal called the “Pioneers Medal,” which was presented to their families on the centennial of the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Role of Sultan Al-Abdulaziz in the Battle of Riyadh

Sultan Al-Abdulaziz was among King Abdulaziz’s men from the very start of the journey to recapture Riyadh, departing from Kuwait in 1901–1902. He accompanied the King in movements around the outskirts of Al-Ahsa Governorate near the Yabrin Oasis, where he stayed to prepare for the plan to enter Riyadh. He continued with the King during his concealment in the Al-Jafurah Desert and accompanied him as he approached the outskirts of Riyadh, specifically to the Shuqayb ridge area.

Sultan remained with the group that King Abdulaziz stationed at Dhul-Shuqayb near Riyadh, tasked with protecting the mounts, supplies, and the rear of their companions who entered Riyadh at night. After King Abdulaziz and his men successfully attacked and entered the house of Ibn Ajlan, Sultan was sent to call them to join the entry into Riyadh and participate in the assault on Al-Masmak Palace. He continued to accompany King Abdulaziz in campaigns and battles during the unification of Saudi Arabia until his death.
