Built in 628 at the beginning of the Islamic era, the mosque is located northeast of al-Hufuf City in al-Ahsa Governorate in the Eastern Province, about seventeen km from al-Hufuf City. It was the first mosque where Friday prayers were held after the Prophet’s Mosque in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. Bani Abdul Qays constructed it using stone and clay mortar and used Shandal wood for the roofing. Covering an area of approximately 206.5 m², it accommodates around 170 worshippers.
The mosque contains three arcades parallel to the Qiblah wall. Both the Qiblah arcade and the central arcade include a Mihrab (prayer niche) and a storage room. In addition, there are three circular towers at the mosque’s external corners, as well as a storage area for dates.
The mosque was restored and rebuilt multiple times. In 1795, it was restored by Sheikh Ahmed Bin Omar and again in 2010 by al-Turath Charitable Foundation, with support from the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu.
