


The Arabic Calligraphy Competition is a contest dedicated to serving Arabic calligraphy and its practitioners. It was launched by Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Global Center for Arabic Calligraphy, one of the initiatives of the Ministry of Culture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on November 17, 2024, to support this art form and highlight it as a fundamental part of the Saudi identity and culture, as well as of the artistic heritage of Islamic and Arab civilization.
Objectives of the Arabic Calligraphy Competition
The Arabic Calligraphy Competition aims to foster artistic and cultural activity in Saudi Arabia, thereby contributing to Saudi Vision 2030, while introducing and promoting the art of Arabic calligraphy, demonstrating its importance, and showcasing the beauty and meaning of its texts. It also seeks to discover calligraphers, support and develop their capabilities, and emphasize the global dimension of Arabic calligraphy through Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Global Center for Arabic Calligraphy.
Target group for the Arabic Calligraphy Competition
The Arabic Calligraphy Competition targets practicing calligraphers.
Tracks of the Arabic Calligraphy Competition
The competition features three main tracks based on the script style: Jali Thuluth Script track, Naskh Script track, and Diwani Script track. Each contestant must select one script style to participate in the competition.
Launch of the In-Person Arabic Calligraphy Competition
The In-Person Arabic Calligraphy Competition took place at Jeddah International Book Fair from December 12-14, 2024, with the participation of fifteen contestants.
Mechanism of the Arabic Calligraphy Competition
The Arabic Calligraphy Competition designated three texts for each script; each contestant writes only one text per day, noting that the text is not revealed until the start of each day’s round. A jury evaluates the works daily, and scores are calculated on the third day to announce the winners. Scoring follows a specific system based on each jury member’s specialty: Approximately 60 percent of the score is assigned by the competent committee member in that particular script, and the remaining 40 percent is divided between the other two members.
Prizes of the Arabic Calligraphy Competition
The Arabic Calligraphy Competition offers monetary prizes at three levels to nine winners. The first-place winner receives SAR50,000, the second-place winner SAR25,000, and the third-place winner SAR10,000.
