It is a Saudi tourism project that includes an archipelago of more than ninety islands, along with mountains, canyons, dormant volcanoes, and desert areas. Its total area spans approximately 28,000 km². The project stretches along two hundred km in northwestern the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between Umluj and al-Wajh Cities in Tabuk Province, on the shores of the Red Sea.

Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, announced the launch of the Red Sea Project on July 31, 2017. The foundation stone was laid in the third quarter of 2019, and the first phase was completed in the last quarter of 2022. This phase focused on preparing the infrastructure and essentials for the project, including the development of hotels, residences, an airport, a port, and transportation services such as boats and seaplanes. The Red Sea Project is owned by the PIF, which provides initial investments and attracts new investments to the Kingdom by partnering with major global companies.

Red Sea Global (the developer of the Red Sea and AMAALA Projects) is working on implementing a set of environmental policies to ensure the destination is free from waste and plastic pollution, prevent any discharge into the sea, achieve 100 percent carbon neutrality, and fully rely on renewable energy.
