The Line is a sustainable million-dollar city project, located within the boundaries‏ of NEOM‏. Its launch was announced by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, ‏crown prince, and prime minister, on January 10, 2021, with its designs unveiled on July 25, 2022. The project presents a model of what urban communities may look like in the future and a plan that ensures a balance with nature.

"The Line" links four natural areas: the coast, the coastal desert, high mountains, and valleys. The longest distance between two areas within the project is twenty minutes. Nature and basic service facilities can be accessed on foot from any point within five minutes.

"The Line" City will be two hundred m wide, 170 km long, and five hundred m above sea level. The Line will accommodate nine million people within a city built on an area of only thirty-four km.

Cognitive Communities of The Line

"The Line's communities employ an intelligent system that uses and analyzes 90 percent of the data collected, saves time and effort, and improves the system of life and business to form constantly evolving cognitive communities. Moreover, the system will raise urban development to a new level, offer permanent services to enhance industries and provide high levels of luxury for all residents. Artificial intelligence is embedded in The Line's cognitive communities and enhances every aspect of the individual's life and business.

The Line's cognitive communities are developed in harmony with nature, as it relies entirely on renewable energy, thus creating a healthy environment with no pollution and noise. The city is a platform for innovation and thriving businesses to address some of the world's most pressing challenges. These communities will also be enhanced by artificial intelligence and will be rich in natural open spaces that will foster the walking culture. Moreover, the comprehensive development of the city will allow easy access to public parks and facilities, as well as the surrounding nature. Their unique design is a qualitative leap that promotes living in harmony with nature in the twenty-first century and the years to come.

Characteristics of "The Line"

The Line is an effective model for responding to the persistent challenges facing humanity, such as climate change, urban sprawl, and traffic jams. The city prioritizes human well-being, nature preservation, and achieving sustainability. Moreover, it provides integrated infrastructure linked to smart and sustainable technologies, including basic facilities and transportation services, thus helping its residents feel comfortable, and enjoy the available public places.

Lifestyle in "The Line"

"The Line" communities are designed to promote a culture of walking, enhancing the lifestyle and healthy living patterns of residents. Artificial intelligence technologies will enhance all automated services, ensuring nearby conveniences within the city for residents to easily meet with their families and friends and spend more time with them.

Mobility at "The Line"

The Line's design steers people away from driving. It turns roads and streets into squares that encourage walking along parks and green spaces. All automated or self-driving transportation, which is fully powered by clean energy, is within a five-minute walking distance. This facilitates the transportation process and turns travel into an enjoyable and stress-free experience. "The Line" will also include an integrated system for transportation via a high-speed train, connecting the two most distant points within the city within a period not exceeding twenty minutes.

Clean energy at "The Line"

"The Line" project will 100 percent rely on renewable energy, which includes wind, solar, and hydrogen to develop a healthy environment free of pollution. The city will create a smart and environmentally friendly transportation and distribution system, as a result of the integration of transportation and energy systems into smart infrastructure. Moreover, the manufacturing and innovation ecosystem will be embedded in The Line's cognitive communities within a system that is free of harmful emissions.

Environment and sustainability at "The Line"

"The Line" City project will preserve 95 percent of NEOM's lands to protect the environment and improve the livelihood of residents. Open natural spaces will also be built on every side of the city, which will restore man’s relationship with nature. The Line's cognitive communities will be self-sufficient as much as possible, and powered entirely by renewable energy to reduce emissions.

"The Line" has been carefully designed to create a local climate that maximizes the benefits of sunlight, natural airflow, and shade, while maintaining a natural balance in air movement, both inward and outward. In addition, the open green spaces throughout the city will enhance comfort for all residents, visitors, and workers alike. "The Line" also supports a culture of local agriculture to achieve sustainable food production.
