Jazan Port was inaugurated in 1976 during the reign of King Khalid Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The port underwent three development phases that included the construction of berths, two levees, and a control tower, along with several service facilities. During the year in which Jazan Port was established, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia faced a challenge due to ports' overcrowding, which called for the establishment of the General Organization of Ports (currently known as the Saudi Ports Authority), as a necessary step to operate and manage ports.
The General Organization of Ports, initially established as an independent public institution, was affiliated with the Prime Minister. Hence, it was the only governmental body enjoying such a level of communication with the government, which was mainly due to the recognition of the vital and efficient role assumed by ports in terms of the Saudi economy and its development projects.
Jazan Port is located on the southern coast of the Red Sea. It is situated approximately 266 nautical miles north of Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. It is known for its close proximity to the marine trade routes to the east and west and for being the largest Saudi port receiving livestock from the countries located in the Horn of Africa.
