Poetry debate, also known as "al-Kalta" or known to some as "al-Radiya," is a form of vocal poetry. It has been known as a verbal heritage of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is based upon melodic poetry recitation or live dialogue sung by two or four poets and repeated by two rows of at least ten performers. It encompasses several poetry levels, some featuring poetic satire or celebration.

Poetry debate is practiced within the community during some occasions, such as wedding ceremonies, forums, or national festivals.

Poetry debate concept

Poetry debate is a form of mental competition that relies on the poet's fast response in selecting ideas and versing poetry. This explains its sophistication and the limited number of Saudi poets who practice this art. The role of the two rows of performers is limited to repeating the last verse recited by poets. It is practiced on a podium where poets and performers stand. It is known as "al-Malaaba."

Poetry debate events

Poetry competitions featuring poetry debates were held, such as the debate of 2019, held during the poetry evenings of the second edition of the Crown Prince Camel Festival, held at Taif Camel Square, in King Faisal Park, the "Riyadh Season Debate," and "Qaf al-Riyadh" poetry debate event in 2022.
