The Saudi Water Authority is a government entity trusted to supervise the implementation of the strategic trends of the water sector, planning and managing water security, and organizing and developing the water supply chain in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Through its phased operational arm (Water Desalination), the authority operates the assets for the production of desalinated water until it is transferred to the Water Solutions Company, according to the Council of Ministers' decision. The authority's headquarters is located in Riyadh City, and the Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture chairs its Board of Directors.

History of the Saudi Water Authority

In 1974, the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) was established by a Royal Decree as an independent government institution with a legal personality affiliated with the ‏Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture.‏ On May 7, 2024, the Council of Ministers approved the transformation of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation into an authority named the Saudi Water Authority.

Saudi Water Authority tasks

The Saudi Water Authority is responsible for a range of tasks, including leading and executing strategic programs, establishing controls and requirements, developing technical and engineering capabilities within the water sector, and conducting comprehensive, integrated planning for water supply chain infrastructure. Additionally, it represents the Kingdom in international organizations and issues licenses related to the industry.

Roles of the Saudi Water Authority

The Saudi Water Authority oversees the implementation of strategic trends, integration with national strategies, promotion of the local content, and applying standard programs related to the economic, social, and quality of life. The authority also encourages international research, innovation, and collaboration, plans and manages water security, supervises the integration of the projects and services within the water supply chain, ensures the sustainability of water security, monitors and analyzes data, measures the performance of services and projects, regulate the water sector, issue licenses, permits, and guides related to entities and operational assets. Additionally, the Saudi Water Authority sets the standards and controls of water quality and any services related to them and regulates agreements within the sector.

The Saudi Water Authority strives to meet the demand for desalinated water at the lowest possible cost by investing in human resources, advancing the desalination industry, supporting economic and social development, and upholding safety and environmental standards.

The Saudi Water Authority's strategy includes supply chain development, environmental conservation, and integration with sustainable development. One of the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 is to use modern technological equipment in the field of water desalination and transfer, and benefit from artificial intelligence in accelerating the production processes of desalinating saline water.
