Al-Hijini Art is a renowned traditional singing art in the northern provinces of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It relies on sung Nabati poems and is also referred to as Hijini poems, named after camels (Hijn), as these poems are often chanted while riding camels during travel.

Types of al-Hijini Art

Al-Hijini poems are divided into two types. The first is performed using a stringed instrument called the Rebab, played by a solo Rebab musician who recites Nabati poetry during celebrations, evening gatherings, and special occasions, accompanied by the audience's chants. The second type is sung by individuals while riding camels, enjoying Hijini recitations to pass the time during their desert journeys without the use of a Rebab. The melody often aligns with the rhythm of the camels’ footsteps, echoing the sound of their hooves as they walk.

Poetry of al-Hijini Art

Al-Hijini Art, in both its types, relies on Nabati poetry composed in the dialects of its poets and performed in their unique recitation styles. Al-Hijini poetry is abundant and diverse, varying from one province to another but unified in its singing style. The skill of the Rebab player shines in performing the "Hijini al-Mashoob," the most renowned type of al-Hijini. Through their expertise in handling the strings of the Rebab, they captivate and excite the audience.
