The Succession Commission Law consists of twenty-five articles that regulate the formation of the Succession Commission, the process of pledging allegiance to the King, and the selection of the Crown Prince in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The law was issued in 2006, amending Paragraph 'c' of Article Five of the Basic Law of Governance, which originally stated, 'The King selects and relieves the Crown Prince by Royal Order,' to read, 'The call for pledging allegiance to the King and selecting the Crown Prince shall be conducted in accordance with the Succession Commission Law.'

The Succession Commission is composed of the sons of the founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, as well as a son of every deceased, declining, or incapacitated (as per a medical report), appointed by the King from among the sons of the founding King. Additionally, the King appoints two members from among his sons and the sons of the Crown Prince. Upon the King’s death, the commission calls for pledging allegiance to the Crown Prince as King.
