Al-Yamamah Archaeological Project is a research project launched by the Heritage Commission under the Ministry of Culture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on September 1, 2024. The project aims to expand archaeological research within the scope of Riyadh City and its surrounding centers, located approximately one hundred km away.

Objectives of al-Yamamah Archaeological Project

Al-Yamamah Archaeological Project aims to enrich the National Antiquities Register, highlight the cultural significance and historical depth of Riyadh City, explore and study cultural heritage sites in Riyadh City, document and preserve them, and showcase the region's expansion and development.

Activities of al-Yamamah Archaeological Project

The Heritage Commission is conducting archaeological survey and excavation projects in Riyadh City within a specified period from 2024 to 2028. The activities include completing the comprehensive survey within Riyadh City and its surrounding centers, in addition to three excavation projects at the sites of Duruma, al-Hunayy, and al-Masani', in collaboration with the commission's partners.

The commission relies on the involvement of experts in the history and archaeology of Riyadh City, as well as related fields, in implementing the project. It also includes the participation of academics and students from Saudi universities, as well as international centers and universities.

Cultural heritage sites in Riyadh Province

Riyadh Province is home to several registered cultural heritage sites, including 1,541 archaeological sites in the National Antiquities Register, 1,812 sites in the National Architectural Heritage Register, and 425 sites featuring rock art and ancient inscriptions.
