The Sword Dance is one of the traditional dances in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, known among the people of Jazan Province. It is performed as a group, in pairs, or individually, relying on silent displays with swords without songs or chants. It is held during wedding occasions.
History of the Sword Dance
The Sword Dance was previously associated with circumcision ceremonies, which were attended by the father, the tribal leader, and prominent figures. These events were typically followed by feasts hosted by the father of the child for the attendees. This dance is also performed by women during wedding celebrations. It is performed after the Asr prayer until Maghrib.
Performing the Sword Dance
The performers of the Sword Dance enter the dance and performance arena, where they perform for a while before leaving to be replaced by others. The dance continues in this manner until it concludes.
The dance relies on artistic movements performed by the dancers with swords, symbolizing energy and bravery. It is accompanied by the rhythms of large drums, including the Zeer.
