The National Geological Database Initiative is an initiative aimed at forming a comprehensive database focused on geology. This database includes information on geological surveys, exploration, mineral resources, and natural resources in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is intended to attract investors and support the industry. The initiative was launched in 2019 by the Saudi Geological Survey as part of the National Industrial Development and Logistics Program (NIDLP).
Objectives of the National Geological Database Initiative
The National Geological Database Initiative aims to provide geology information services effectively and securely. Its objectives include enriching the mining sector, supporting the comprehensive strategy for mining, attracting investments to the sector, and supporting national geology data in various fields such as geological maps, geochemical and geophysical surveys, the national drilling library, and promising mineralization sites in the Kingdom. It also aims to contribute to the establishment and provision of systems dedicated to providing geological information services and to establish the infrastructure for the national geological database.
Target groups of the National Geological Database Initiative
The National Geological Database Initiative targets investors in the mining sector, as well as students and researchers in the field of geology and both the private and public sectors involved in applied sciences.
The National Geological Database Initiative achievements in 2023
Several projects related to the National Geological Database Initiative have been implemented, including maintenance of the National Geological Database Portal, the development of the initial part of the database's electronic applications, procurement of advanced servers and storage solutions, and the development of the database's infrastructure. Additionally, the database has been enriched with regional data packages provided by investors and researchers for information published on the National Geological Database Portal, including geological maps, mineral deposit locations, regional geochemical survey data, and records about drilling, wells, and surface trenches.
The National Geological Database Portal has recorded approximately thirty thousand visitors from the fourth quarter of 2022 through to the end of the third quarter of 2023.
