Tarjim Initiative is an initiative launched by the Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission in September 2020 with the aim of supporting the translation movement in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, enriching Arabic content with translated materials from various languages, and empowering Saudi translators. To achieve these goals, the initiative follows two tracks: the Academic Journals Track and the Translation Grants Track.
Objectives of Tarjim Initiative
The Tarjim Initiative is one of the initiatives announced by the Ministry of Culture, aiming to achieve several key objectives, primarily to publish Arabic works globally with high quality and to enrich Arabic content with translated materials from world languages that hold both scientific and literary value.
The initiative also aims to serve the Arabic language by translating to and from it, supporting researchers and students in Arabic by providing translated materials of scientific and literary significance, and promoting efforts toward international cultural exchange.
The work of the Tarjim Initiative
The Tarjim Initiative works on translating the latest global scientific and intellectual articles and making them freely accessible to Arabic readers, in addition to its primary roles in translating books and reference works to and from Arabic.
The initiative targets translators, Arabic-speaking researchers, enthusiasts in the fields of humanities and literature, and professionals in the translation sector.
Tracks of the Tarjim Initiative
The Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission has outlined two main tracks for the Tarjim Initiative. The first track is the Translation Grant, which targets only Saudi publishing houses. This track follows a mechanism that ensures the production of high-quality translated materials, supporting authors, translators, and publishers within the Kingdom.
The Translation Grant track undertakes several mandates, including supporting the writing and publishing movement in the Kingdom by translating distinguished works, empowering Saudi translators, enriching Arabic content with high-value translated materials, and further enabling Saudi translators.
The Academic Journals track is the second track of the Tarjim Initiative. It focuses on translating academic journals in cultural, social, and humanities fields and publishing them on the Tarjim Initiative’s online platform to enrich Arabic knowledge content.
It goes through three main stages: identifying academic journals with the highest knowledge value, translating them into Arabic, and then publishing them on the Tarjim platform to make them accessible to Arab researchers, enabling them to stay on par with their global counterparts in scientific research.
Tarjim Initiative at the Riyadh International Book Fair
The Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission launched the "Tarjim" Initiative as part of the events at the Riyadh International Book Fair 2022. The fair set a Guinness World Record with the largest word composed of over seven thousand books, forming the word "Tarjim." The Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission received the certificate of registration in the presence of the official Guinness World Records adjudicator.
The largest word made of books was designed to highlight the importance of translation in bridging nations and civilizations and promoting global cultural exchange. This massive word was formed from four separate letters, using a total of 7,191 books. These books were part of the Tarjim Initiative launched by the commission as part of the fair’s events.
