The Professional Guide for Translators is a professional instructional guide aimed at translators, including professionals, enthusiasts, and amateurs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The first edition was issued in 2023 by the Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission of the Ministry of Culture in the Kingdom, in collaboration with the Translation Association, to support the translation profession and its practitioners.
Objectives of the Professional Guide for Translators
The Professional Guide for Translators aims to identify the types, fields, channels, and technical characteristics of translation. It clarifies the qualities of a professional translator, their central role, and the necessary skills. Additionally, the guide outlines the ethics of the translation profession and the code of conduct for professional translators. It also details the duties and rights of all parties involved in the translation process, offers quality standards in translation and methods for ensuring them, introduces modern translation technologies and management techniques, and presents a range of scientific information and data to support the practice of translation.
Contents of the Professional Guide for Translators
The Professional Guide for Translators spans 110 pages, beginning with an introduction to the concept of translation, its essence, and its cultural, scientific, social, political, and administrative roles. Following this introduction, the guide is divided into seven main sections: types of translation; qualities and skills of the translator; ethics of the translation profession and code of conduct; duties and rights in translation; translation quality; modern translation technologies; and translation project management. Each section includes two or three chapters.
The guide concludes with a closing section followed by four appendices. The first appendix covers the state and prospects of translation in the Kingdom, the second provides the methodology for official nomenclature, the third lists names of governmental and official entities, and the fourth presents examples of regulatory practices and professional translation guides from around the world.
