The Saudi Arabian Oil Company "Saudi Aramco" began producing crude oil in commercial quantities in 1938. The company produces five types of crude oil: Arabian Heavy, Arabian Medium, Arabian Light, Arabian Extra Light, and Arabian Super Light. Among the largest oil fields are:
Ghawar field
Located about one hundred km west of Dhahran City, it is classified as one of the largest oil fields in the world. Its proven reserves reached 58.32 billion bbl of oil equivalent in 2018, and its production volume exceeds half of the cumulative total crude oil production in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Khurais field
Situated approximately 150 km southeast of the capital, Riyadh, it produces three hundred thousand per day. Its production increased from 1.2 million to 1.5 million bbl per day during mid-2018.
Safaniya field
Located about 260 km north of Dhahran City, it is considered the largest offshore oil field in the world in terms of proven reserves, which reached 34.03 billion bbl of oil equivalent in 2018.
Buqayq field
Situated in the Eastern Province, it is the main center for processing Arabian Light and Arabian Extra Light crude oil, with a production capacity of up to seven million bbl per day. It handles the processing of oil, natural gas liquids, and utilities.
