List of Saudi Border Demarcation Agreements with Neighboring Countries

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia shares approximately 4,531 km of land borders and 3,400 km of coastlines along the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea. The Kingdom is bordered by eight Arab countries on land and is faced by four countries in the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aqaba.

Since the reign of the Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, the Kingdom has prioritized demarcating its borders, both on land and at sea, with neighboring countries, through official agreements. These agreements are listed below, except Eritrea:

Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

An agreement concerning the land border between both countries was signed on August 9, 1965. A separate agreement on maritime borders in the Gulf of Aqaba was signed on December 16, 2007.

Republic of Iraq

The International Border Treaty between the two countries was signed on December 26, 1981.

State of Kuwait

The convention marking the border between Najd and Kuwait was signed on December 2, 1922. Another agreement concerning the neutral zone (divided zone) was signed on July 7, 1965. A subsequent agreement to designate the midline of the neutral zone was signed on December 18, 1969. An agreement regarding the submerged area adjacent to the Saudi-Kuwaiti divided zone, which designated its northern and southern borders and its division line. The eastern border of this area has not yet been established between the two countries as one party, and Iran as the other party. The agreement was signed on July 2, 2000.

Kingdom of Bahrain

A border agreement between the Kingdom and the Bahrain government was signed on February 22, 1985.

State of Qatar

An agreement on demarcating land and maritime borders was signed on December 4, 1965. A joint minutes regarding land borders and the completion of maritime border demarcation beyond Khawr al-Udayd was signed on July 5, 2008.

United Arab Emirates

The land boundary has been defined, but the maritime boundary has yet to be agreed upon, under the land and maritime borders agreement signed on August 21, 1974.

Sultanate of Oman

The International Border Agreement (Treaty of Taif) was signed on March 21, 1990.

Republic of Yemen

An international border treaty was signed on June 12, 2000. The Treaty of Taif was signed earlier, on May 20, 1934.

Islamic Republic of Iran

An agreement regarding the sovereignty over al-Arabi and al-Farsi islands, and the delimitation of the boundary line separating submarine areas between both countries, was signed on October 24, 1968.

Republic of Sudan

An agreement on the joint exploitation of natural resources in the shared area of the Red Sea within the one-thousand-m depth contour was signed on May 16, 1974. The exclusive economic zone boundaries between the two countries have not yet been agreed upon.

Arab Republic of Egypt

An agreement defining the maritime borders in the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea was signed on April 8, 2016.
