The Saudi Sambo Committee is one of the official federations responsible for developing the sport of self-defense in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was established on March 19, 1987, under the supervision of the Ministry of Sport and the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

Committee objectives

The Saudi Sambo Committee aims to promote the concept of Sambo within the Kingdom, encouraging young men and women to practice the sport, and to participate in local, regional, and international competitions. It also focuses on involving women in the federation system as players, referees, and coaches.

The Saudi Sambo Committee also aims to host international and regional championships in the Kingdom, promote the culture of sports for all, increase awareness of sportsmanship throughout the Kingdom, and achieve digital transformation in all internal transactions through the Saudi Sambo Federation portal to facilitate procedures for members of the sport's system.

Sambo sport

Sambo is a sport developed by the Russian Red Army in the 1920s. It incorporates techniques from various martial arts, such as Japanese judo, boxing, freestyle wrestling, Kazakh wrestling, Uzbek wrestling, Mongolian wrestling, Armenian wrestling, and Azerbaijani wrestling. In 1938, the Soviet Sports Committee (Russia) officially recognized it as a sport.

Similar to wrestling, a Sambo practitioner usually wears either a red or blue competition uniform. The top and belt are inspired by judo but feature belt loops, shoulder straps, and wrestling-style shorts. The shoes match the color of the uniform.

The Sambo uniform does not display rank or competitive classification, and the sport's rules require athletes to have either red or blue sets to visually distinguish competitors on the mat.
