The Fadhili Plant is a production facility aimed at increasing gas supplies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is part of the expansion of the Kingdom's main gas network to meet the rising energy demand in the country. The operational performance of this plant is distinguished by several advantages compared to other facilities. It uses technology based on turbochargers to reduce electricity consumption to fifty-five GW.

Features of the Fadhili Plant

The Fadhili Plant, which began partial operations in the last quarter of 2019, is a significant addition to the Kingdom's main gas network. It incorporates new technologies and innovative methods that enhance both operational and environmental performance. The plant plays a major role in increasing gas processing and supply capacity, supporting the Kingdom's industrial and economic development goals. In 2022, the processing capacity of the main gas network reached 18 billion standard ft per day.

Contributions of the Fadhili Plant

The Fadhili Plant processes two billion standard ft per day of raw gas from the Hasbah field and an additional half-billion standard ft per day of raw gas from the Khursaniyah field. These fields are characterized by highly productive reservoirs that were developed using modern drilling, production, and reservoir management technologies, which helped reduce the project's capital costs.

Mandates of the Fadhili Plant

The Fadhili Gas Plant processes gas from both onshore and offshore fields, with a capacity of 2.5 billion standard ft per day of raw gas. It supplies 1.5 billion standard ft per day of sales gas to the Master Gas System and provides an additional 470 million standard ft per day of low-calorific gas to the Fadhili Combined Heat and Power Plant. The Fadhili Gas Plant is one of Saudi Aramco's facilities that processes non-associated gas from both onshore and offshore fields.

The Fadhili Plant also utilizes low-calorific natural gas to power an independent electricity station, with the capability to switch to sales gas as needed. This flexibility enables the company to generate electricity from low-value gas while increasing supplies to the main gas network. These improvements resulted in significant capital cost savings, as well as reduced annual operating expenses.

The plant witnessed several other innovations. It was designed from the outset to process exhaust gas to ensure maximum sulfur recovery (at a rate of 99.9 percent), which helps protect air quality.

The power plant's production capacity, operating on a "cogeneration" system, is 1,500 MW, which is supplied to the national grid, including 250 MW for the gas plant. The electricity generated by the plant is equivalent to the consumption of 1.4 million people. The plant also produces 1,447 t of steam per hour and 768.8 t of water per hour, which are supplied to Saudi Aramco.

Also, 46 percent of the materials and raw supplies for the Fadhili gas plant are sourced from local suppliers and manufactured within the Kingdom.
