Taasheer, or Hijazi Taasheer, is one of the traditional dances for which the western province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is famous. It is also known as the art of playing with iron and fire using al-Maqma weapon. The first performances of this dance resembled a military parade to instill enthusiasm in the warriors. Over the course of Saudi history, the art of Taasheer has transitioned from battle readiness to national celebration arenas as a cultural heritage.

Performance of Taasheer Dance

Taasheer requires skill, fitness, agility, and training. The performer fires shots from al-Maqma rifle. While jumping, the performer should only bend his knees and lower torso. Then, he points the muzzle of the rifle towards the ground with both hands and quickly pulls the trigger.

There are multiple techniques for performing Hijazi Taasheer, some of which can be practiced by anyone, while others are challenging and require high proficiency and extensive practice by the performer. These movements include the side movement to the right or left, al-Kaft movement, which involves lowering the rifle from beneath the feet, and the back movement, a difficult maneuver performed only by professionals.

In Taasheer, the performer walks in a specific way with orderly, choreographed steps where roles and tasks are coordinated. This dance can be performed by one person, two people, or more simultaneously.

Taasheer is accompanied by chants, notably a folk style known as 'al-Rajz' or 'al-Radeh' in some provinces and governorates. In this style, the poet sings words of pride and honor, while the performers enter the arena alternately and in a specific manner.

Taasheer in Saudi Culture

Taasheer dance reflects a celebratory tradition in the context of social events such as weddings. It resembles the traditional style of dances in the Kingdom, featuring opposing rows on the dance area and the style of foot-stomping while carrying rifles known as 'al-Qudahi.' However, it differs from other dances in the type of movement and vocal interaction between the rows.

Taasheer in intangible heritage

Taasheer is considered part of the folklore within the national cultural competitions organized by the Ministry of Culture in the Kingdom. In 2019, the ministry launched a competition offering cash prizes, where various folk arts compete within the category of traditional dance.

Taasheer is present as a cultural and social heritage in social and national celebrations, such as official events and national festivals.
