It is one of the folkloric dances in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, prevalent in the western region. It has gained popularity since ancient times among the Thaqif tribe, as well as the tribes surrounding Taif. Over time, it extended to the outskirts of Makkah-al-Mukarramah and al-Madina-al-Munawwarah, encompassing the entire al-Hejaz region.
The dance method involves splitting the participants into two opposing rows. They are attired in a uniform referred to as al-Hawisi, which includes a spacious white robe and a belt with live ammunition. The performers hold drums and engage in rhythmic chants. Positioned amidst the opposing rows, one performer holds a drum and plays it while seated among the rows. Typically, he does not take part in the singing.
