Riyadh Municipality is the entity responsible for developing and providing municipal services in Riyadh Province in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is one of the seventeen municipalities distributed across the thirteen provinces of the Kingdom. It focuses on the urban development of Riyadh Province and aims to achieve its sustainable development. In addition, it is responsible for providing municipal services to citizens and residents.

History of Riyadh Region Municipality

Riyadh Region Municipality was established as a municipality in 1937. The first person to hold the position of the Mayor was Hassan Bukhari. He served until 1941, followed by seven mayors who worked during the reign of the founding King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman al-Saud. The term of office for each of them at the municipality varied between one to two years.

Riyadh Region Municipality development

In 1953, King Saud bin Abdulaziz issued a decree appointing Prince Fahd bin Faisal bin Farhan as the Mayor of Riyadh Municipality. In 1955, a decision was made to change the name of Riyadh Municipality to Riyadh Region Municipality. Thus, Prince Fahd bin Faisal bin Farhan became its first mayor. Following his tenure, eight consecutive mayors led the municipality until 2023.

Riyadh Region Municipality organization

The name of Riyadh City Municipality was changed to Riyadh Region Municipality in 2005, following several decisions issued by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs (currently known as the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing.) These decisions included renaming the municipalities of the regions, linking the municipalities and rural complexes, abolishing the general directorates for municipal and rural affairs, and linking the municipalities and rural clusters in the province to the mayor.

Municipalities affiliated with Riyadh Region Municipality

Riyadh Region Municipality is organizationally linked with the Ministry of Municipal Rural Affairs and Housing. Its headquarters is located in Riyadh, the seat of the Emirate of the Province. The municipality is affiliated with sixteen municipalities: al-Olaya Municipality, Irqah Municipality, al-Rawda Municipality, al-Batha Municipality, al-Aziziyah Municipality, al-Shmeisi Municipality, Diriyah Municipality, al-Shefa Municipality, Namar Municipality, al-Naseem Municipality, al-Mathar Municipality, Northern Riyadh Municipality, al-Hayir Municipality, al-Orayja Municipality, al-Sharq Municipality, and al-Malaz Municipality.

Tasks of Riyadh Region Municipality

Riyadh Region Municipality has various tasks, including the construction and maintenance of public markets and specialized markets, the implementation and maintenance of aesthetic sculpture projects, the preparation and equipping of landfills, road and street pavement, and the implementation and maintenance of parks and gardens.

It also oversees the issuance of various professional licenses, monitors food and consumer products, controls their prices and the prices of public services, monitors weights and measures in collaboration with relevant authorities, and works on maintaining the cleanliness of streets, squares, parks, slaughterhouses, and public areas.
