SATORP is a world-class refinery that began operations in 2014. It is environmentally friendly and one of the most advanced refineries in the world.
It processes 450,000 barrels per day of Arabian heavy crude oil. The refinery is located in al-Jubayl Industrial City 2 on the Arabian Gulf coast, about one hundred km north of Dammam. The location has a dual advantage: proximity to international maritime routes via the Gulf and access to energy sources and raw materials necessary for operations.
The refinery produces various types of fuel such as gasoline, paraxylene, jet fuel, diesel, propylene, coke, and sulfur, in addition to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which consists of propane (C3) and butane (C4). LPG can be used locally for heating or lighting, as well as fuel for some vehicles (primarily in Europe). It is also used in the refining and petrochemical industries, hydrogen production plants, and steam cracking units for producing derivatives (the main components for plastic production).
