Patents in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are registered by clicking the services page, going to the patent portal, on the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property website, selecting apply a new request, then uploading the documents related to the patent application specifications, including the full description, abstract, claims, and drawings if available and filling the required information. Then, the applicant agrees to the declaration and pays the registration fees. After that, the application will undergo formal examination and substantive examination, and a patent will be granted if it meets the requirements, protecting the invention for twenty years.
Patents in the Kingdom are registered in accordance with the Law of Patents, Layout Designs of Integrated Circuits, Plant Varieties, and Industrial Designs, issued in 2004. Article Two of this law states that an invention is an idea developed by an inventor that results in a solution for a certain problem in the field of technology.
A patent is defined as an exclusive right granted for an invention. The patent provides the owner with the authority to decide how or whether the invention can be used by others. In return for this right, the patent owner makes technical information about the invention publicly available in the published patent document.
