Highway Forty is one of the vital arteries in the Saudi land transport network and one of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's primary roads. It serves more than 66 percent of the Kingdom’s population as it connects its western and eastern parts. The route passes through three provinces: Makkah al-Mukarramah, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province. Highway Forty starts from its intersection with Highway Five in Jeddah Governorate on the Red Sea coast. It proceeds eastward via Makkah al-Mukarramah, as-Sayl al-Kabir, al-Hawiyyah, Radwan, al-Muwayh, Dhalm, ar-Ruwaydah, Halaban, al-Quwayiyyah, al-Muzahimiyyah, and through the capital Riyadh. Highway Riyadh ends at its intersection with Highway (615) in the city of Dammam, and the route’s cumulative length from Jeddah to Dammam is (1,370) km.

Route description of Highway Forty

From beginning to end, Highway Forty consists of two-way roads, alongside additional express lanes equipped with segregated lanes and protective features. It typically includes either steel collision barriers or concrete protective walls.

The Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services has equipped this type of road with safety measures to provide comfort and security for its users. These measures include: paving hard shoulders and leveling their side slopes, painting the sides and center of the road, installing reflective road markers 'cats eyes', as well as providing roads with protective barriers, kilometer markers, and directional, warning, and guide signs.

Highway Forty in the Eastern Province

The Riyadh - Dammam Highway was established in 1961, as means to link the capital with oil-rich and economic cities in the Eastern Province. This highway serves a large number of governorates and villages on its sides, starting from the northeast of Riyadh and ending with Dammam - Abu Hadriyah Highway. The total length of the Riyadh-Dammam Highway is about 383 km, consisting of bi-directional routes separated by a twenty m-wide median strip. Each direction consists of three lanes. There are a total of thirty-six bridges and nineteen intersections along the highway, as well as twenty-four underpasses.

Highway Forty in the Eastern Province encompasses several roads, including:
